2016 Iowa Shrine All Star Football Game Media Day
Each fall the Iowa high school coaches are requested to recommend a defensive and offensive player whom he feels will be a good representative of his school and community. He is not only a good athlete, but also one who is academically successful and active in school and community activities. In July, the Iowa High School Coaches Association selects a head coach for each squad. They in turn select 5 assistants from each class in the state. The coaches then select the players from the nominations submitted earlier by their coaches.
There are 46 graduating high school seniors selected for each squad by the coaching staffs. The division line for the North and South squads is HWY 30 as is crosses the state from east to west. The Iowa Shrine All Star Football Game is established by a group of sports minded Iowa Shriners after having seen the success of Shrine operated football games in other states. The contributions from this annual event now total over $2.6 million dollars in support of the Shrine Hospital programs for children. Last year's effort was $80,000.
We had 4 area student athletes selected to be apart of this event representing GT/RA, Pocahontas Area, Spencer and Spirit Lake. Michael Girres and his head coach Todd Hough from GT/RA, Tanner Youngberg and his head coaches Roger Sommerlot and Mike Ehn from Pocahontas Area, Nate Nissen and his head coach Jim Tighe from Spencer and Logan Backhaus and his head coach Josh Bolluyt from Spirit Lake.
Not pictured and unable to attend were Spirit Lake player Logan Backhaus and Spirit Lake coach Josh Bolluyt.
