Ethel J. Pohlen

Mass of Christian burial for Ethel J. Pohlen, 92 of Estherville, will be held on Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at 10:30 AM at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Estherville. Burial to follow at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Estherville.  Visitation for Ethel will be from 5 PM to 7PM on Tuesday, March 12, 2019 at the Henry Olson Funeral Chapel in Estherville. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.

Ethel Julia (Neppl) Pohlen the daughter of Henry J. and Mary (Snyder) Neppl was born October 17, 1926 in Estherville, Iowa.  She died on Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at her home at Windsor Manor in Estherville at the age of 92.

She received her education and graduated from Estherville High School.  Following high school, Ethel worked at JC Penney's in Estherville.

On June 29, 1950 she was united in marriage to Jerome Pohlen at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Estherville.  Over the years the couple lived in several towns while Jerry served in the Military.  Along the way, they adopted their five children.  Ethel and Jerry settled in the McLean, Virginia and Washington, D.C. area for several years and had several foster children while living in McLean.   The couple retired in Destin, Florida. For hobbies, Ethel enjoyed golfing, gardening, bowling, and traveling the world.  Ethel was known for her famous cookies.

Ethel was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of America and was Chair of the Special Olympics.

Left to cherish Ethel's memory are her husband, Jerome of Estherville; children, Maggie (Kim) Kazel-Pipitone of Holyoke, Minnesota; Geralyn (Tom) Osoba of Parker, Colorado; Jeff Pohlen of Bloomington, Indiana; Mark Pohlen of New Orleans, Louisiana; Jackie (Mark) Klepper of Milford, Iowa; five grandchildren, Angela, John, Ashley, Kelly, Lani; three great grandchildren, Olivia, Fran, Bane; siblings, Lorraine Kirchner; Bernice Bendixen, Rita Mae Fox, Earl "Bud" (Dorothy) Neppl and several nieces and nephews.

She has been preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Isadore Neppl, Florence Christensen, Melvin Neppl, and Gerald Neppl.
