Zebra Mussels Confirmed In Storm Lake

(Storm Lake)-- Zebra mussels have been confirmed in Storm Lake.

DNR officials say young zebra mussels were found in water samples earlier this month, and further investigation revealed the presence of juvenile and adult zebra mussels in other locations around Storm Lake. Additional monitoring will be done on the lake this fall and next summer to get a better handle on the number and distribution of zebra mussels.

Kim Bogenschutz, Aquatics Invasive Species Program Coordinator for the DNR, says the zebra mussels likely got into Storm Lake on or in a boat that had picked up the mussels from an infested water body like the Iowa Great Lakes or the Missouri River.
