Zebra Mussels Confirmed In Lost Island Lake

(Ruthven)-- Zebra mussels have been confirmed in another area lake.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says young zebra mussels were found in an August water sample from Lost Island Lake near Ruthven. Further investigation also found some adult zebra mussels in the lake.

Kim Bogenschutz, Aquative Invasive Species Program coordinator for the DNR, says it's likely they arrived on or in a boat that had picked them up from an infested water body, such as the Spirit Lake/Okoboji chain of lakes or Storm Lake.

Bogenschutz says DNR staff will conduct additional surveys at Lost Island Lake this fall and next summer to monitor the zebra mussel population and their distribution.
