Warm Weather Resulting In Quickly Deteriorating Ice Conditions
Fri 3-13-2015
(Spirit Lake)-- Temperatures a good 20 to 25 degrees above normal for this time of year are taking a toll on ice conditions on the Iowa Great Lakes. That has officials putting out a warning to those doing some late season ice fishing and others planning to venture out onto lakes: do so with extreme caution and test the thickness of the ice out ahead of you with something like a spud bar.
Officials say many of the more shallow lakes will likely open up in the next couple of days or so.
Ice is typically the last to leave West Lake Okoboji due to its depth. It's also usually the last lake in the Iowa Great Lakes chain to freeze over in the fall for that same reason.
Officials say those venturing out onto the deteriorating ice need to keep a close eye out as conditions are rapidly changing.
