Upper Des Moines Opportunity reminding Residents to apply for LIHEAP
Tue 2-2-2021 1575 18th Street Spirit Lake, IA
(Spirit Lake)-Help is available with home heating costs through the LIHEAP program, KUOO's Becky Thoreson has details:
With cold weather on the way, Upper Des Moines Opportunity is reminding residents that assistance is available with the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP.
Outreach Specialist Catie Cattrysse explains how it works. "Basically, what it does is it takes your heat bill, whether it be gas, electric, propane, however you heat your house, and it puts money toward that bill. It's all income-based, so we'll need 30 days proof of income and your current utility bill. If you're not a client of ours, we'll need your Social Security card as well, but once we have your 30 days proof of income, we'll enter it in and it will give you an allotment depending on your income, and how much it will help towards your heating costs."
She adds that the application process is fairly simple. "You can stop by our office, our hours are 8-noon and 1-4 Monday through Friday and pick up the application. It's a two-sided piece of paper, pretty easy to fill out. Once you get the application filled out, we'll take all of your paperwork go ahead and process it within a week or two."
