(Des Moines)-- Two area communities have been awarded funds to assist in upgrades to their water treatment facilities.
Spencer Municipal Utilities will receive $14,125 and Alta Municipal Utilities was awarded $363,480.
They’re among 15 water quality projects statewide that will benefit from a combined total of more than $20.7 million in low-cost water quality loans through the State Revolving Fund. The fund is jointly administered by the Iowa Finance Authority and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
The program has awarded Iowa communities and municipalities more than $2.5 billion in construction loans and nearly $150 million through planning and design loans since the program’s inception.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency provides annual capitalization grants to states. The leveraged bonds and loan repayments has resulted in more than $3 in assistance being leveraged for Iowa water quality projects for every $1 of federal funds.
