(Spirit Lake)-- The Marble Beach Campground on the west side of Big Spirit Lake is now off limits to the general public as a $3.5 million renovation of the facility is about to get underway.
Barricades have been set up at the main entrances and crews have already started to remove some trees and brush.
Plans for the project were made public in January at a meeting the Iowa Department of Natural Resources hosted at Lakeside Lab. Frank Rickerl, District Supervisor of Parks for Northwest Iowa, outlined the planned improvements at Marble Beach that include new roads, new electrical and sewer services, new campsites and two new restrooms.
Marble Beach will also be off limits to campers during the upcoming season. Rickerl says they'll need to make arrangements at one of the other state campgrounds in the area such as Gull Point, Emerson Bay or Elinor Bedell. Rickerl says they apologize for the inconvenience the Marble Beach project will cause, but he says it will be worth it when campers see all the improvements once the facility reopens in a year or so from now. The project is tentatively scheduled for completion in May, 2019.
