Sunrise Farms Of Harris Files Federal Lawsuit In Connection With 2015 Bird Flu Outbreak
(Harris)-- A northwest Iowa egg farm has filed a lawsuit against companies hired by the federal government to disinfect its barns following a 2015 outbreak of bird flu.
Sunrise Farms of Harris claims the gas and heat treatments that were used to kill the virus ruined its equipment, electrical wiring and water lines. Sunrise Farms also claims the structural integrity of its barns was diminished as a result.
The companies that did the disinfection work were hired by the USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service division, which also euthanized birds to prevent the virus from spreading. The companies being sued are in turn suing their subcontractors.
More than four million egg laying hens were located on the site near Harris.
The case is scheduled to go to trial January 27th of 2020 in U.S. District Court in Sioux City.
