Tue 6-8-2021

(Spirit Lake)-- Spirit Lake's new Police Chief is coming from within the department. The city council Tuesday evening unanimously approved a recommendation from Mayor Bruce Keenan to appoint Shane Brevik to the position, succeeding longtime Chief Jeff Hanson who will be retiring effective at the end of the month. Brevik says he's looking forward to his new duties as chief...Shane Brevik01

"You know I was born and raised here in Spirit Lake and I had always wanted to work for the Spirit Lake Police Department and so I've worked here for several years and just a number of years ago I decided that I thought I wanted to lead it and maybe kind of put my stamp on the department and, you know, so I started to work to make that reality."

Brevik has been in law enforcement more than 20 years...Shane Brevik02

"I've been a police officer for almost 23 years, since 2006 here in Spirit Lake. I was promoted to a sergeant in 2009 and then I also have been a member of the HEAT Tactical Team since 2002 and also team lead since 2009 on the HEAT Tactical Team, so that's kind of the main parts of my experience."

Brevik says as of right now he has no major changes planned for the Spirit Lake Police Department...Shane Brevik03

"I want to continue what Chief Hanson has done, and you know, he's done a great job. We've got a great bunch of officers, and you know, kind of start off slow and kind of get used to things and, you know, I don't see any changes coming, so."

Brevik's appointment as chief now means the department will be down an officer. He says they will soon begin the process of filling the opening.
