Spirit Lake Protective Association to host Independence Day Celebration July 3
(Spirit Lake)-The Independence Day Celebration is about to get underway at Big Spirit Lake, KUOO's Becky Thoreson has details:
The Spirit Lake Protective Association hosts their annual Independence Day Celebration on July 3rd, with a Pancake Feed at Mini-Wakan State Park on Wednesday morning, and fireworks over Big Spirit Lake on Wednesday night.
President Kirk Huisenga says the pancake fundraiser helps fund the important work of the Association. "One of the most visible obviously is the fireworks, but we are involved with the Reed's Run purchase, which is on the southeast side of Big Spirit, we keep that in conservation. We partner with the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, and have been involved with them and try to follow our pursuit of clean water for the Iowa Great Lakes. In the last year, some phenomenal things took place on the north side of Big Spirit with the Heritage Foundation. We are extremely pleased about this very historic moment, actually, where over 200 acres of farmland on the north shore is going to be taken out of farming, and there will be some more conservation practices, so it's going to be really a big deal going forward."
The Pancake Feed will run from 8 to noon on Wednesday, with the fireworks set to start at 10 pm over Big Spirit Lake.
