Spirit Lake & Orleans Residents May Soon See Increase In Water Rates
(Spirit Lake)-- Spirit Lake residents may soon be seeing an increase in their water rates. The city council last (Tues.) evening approved the 1st reading of a proposed ordinance that would adjust rates upwards in three different increments. The first increase would take affect this coming July 1st; a second increase would go into affect July 1st, 2018; with a third increase July 1st, 2019.
City Attorney-Administrator Greg Owens told the council two factors are behind the proposed increase...
"Partially due to costs, of course, for running the water utility, but mostly the result of the zebra mussel-raw water project, and the need, of course, we have SRF funding to pay that back. So this is just the first consideration of the ordinance and we'll have two more at successive council meetings."
The new rates would also affect residents of Orleans, as the city of Spirit Lake supplies water to that town as well.
The zebra mussel-raw water project at the pump house on the south shore of Big Spirit Lake and the water treatment plant is currently under way.
