Spirit Lake, Lake Park Fire Depts. Battle Large Field Fire
(Montgomery)-- Two area fire departments battled a large field fire Tuesday evening near Montgomery. Spirit Lake Fire Chief Pat Daly tells KUOO news firefighters were called to 1908 140th Street around 8:00 pm...
"It was out in the middle of a field. They were burning corn stubble off and we just weren't getting in on it, so we called Lake Park for some mutual aid. They brought a tanker and another ATV over and a grass truck. We went out and battled it for as long as we could until the rain got too bad that we couldn't get out there any more."
Daly says smoke from the blaze was so dense it resulted in a couple of near accidents on nearby Highway 86.
Daly says it started as a controlled burn. He says it serves as a reminder on a couple of fronts...
"The weather in Iowa changes real quick and you really need to keep track of what the weather's going to do if you're planning on a burn. Please go ahead and call the Communications Center and let them know that we have a controlled burn, then they notify us so we kind of have an idea of what's going on."
No injuries were reported.
Firefighters were on the scene until about midnight.
