Spirit Lake City Council Awards Bid On Erie Avenue Project

Wed 3-11-2020

(Spirit Lake)-- The Spirit Lake City Council Tuesday evening awarded a bid on a major street project. The low bid of just over a million dollars for the reconstruction of a portion of Erie Avenue was submitted by DeLoss Construction of Spencer. It came in under the engineer's estimate of slightly more than $1.2 million. Brad Beck of Beck Engineering is overseeing the project for the city. He says it was one of three bids submitted for the work...Erie Ave Bids01

"We got three bids from three reputable contractors. All were below our estimate. The low bid was a little over 11 percent below the estimate and the higher of the three was about six percent. So they were really tightly contested and that's usually a sign of good competitive bids."

Beck says the work on Erie Avenue will be taking place between Highways 9 & 71 and 23rd Street...Erie Ave Bids02

"So that will be removal of the existing pavement, there will be some water main, some storm sewer and some sanitary sewer work that goes on underneath, re-grading and then a new concrete street."

He says work is scheduled to get started this spring...Erie Ave Bids03

"It'll start in the spring as soon as the weather will allow and we hope to have it done by late summer or early fall. We don't have an exact schedule yet from the contractor as we just awarded it tonight, but we'll have a pre-construction conference with the contractor in the next month or so and then we'll have more detail on the exact schedule when they're planning to move in and be done and we'll be able to communicate that to the residents along the project route."

The council also held a public hearing on the project last (Tues.) evening which drew no written or verbal comments.
