Spirit Lake, Arnolds Park-Okoboji Fire Depts. Respond To Polaris Industries

Wed 4-10-2019

(Spirit Lake)-- A fire this morning resulted in the evacuation of Polaris Industries in Spirit Lake.

Spirit Lake Fire Chief Pat Daly tells KUOO news firefighters were called to the scene around 10:15...Pat Daly01

"When we got on the scene we had smoke showing, heavy smoke showing, and so we started making an advance into the building to find the source of the fire. We did call in Arnolds Park-Okoboji because we needed manpower, sbca's, because the building is so big. What happened was they were removing an old paint booth where the chimney went through the roof. They sparked it and started it on fire and then of course the fire got in to the styrofoam on top of the roof."

Initial reports from the scene indicated the fire was quickly extinguished by a suppression system and was said to be out when firefighters arrived, but Daly says it flared up again in a ceiling.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters were on the scene until 1:30 pm.

Workers were continuing to ventilate the building through the afternoon.

An ambulance from Lakes Regional Healthcare stood by on the scene while firefighters were there as a precaution. Dickinson County Emergency Management was also on the scene which flew a drone with infrared heat detection equipment over the plant to check for hot spots in the roof.
