Spencer Woman Among First To Be Inducted Into Special Olympics Iowa Hall Of Fame
(Grimes)-- A Spencer woman is among the first six people to be inducted into the newly founded Special Olympics Iowa Hall of Fame. Rhonda Thornton of Spencer and five others were inducted during a ceremony Monday at the Iowa Hall of Pride.
Thornton started the Spencer Schools Special Olympics delegation in 1987 and was the first coach in the area to provide official team uniforms and coaches' training. She created and utilized adaptive equipment and techniques for athletes with severe disabilities.
Thornton was named Special Olympics Iowa Coach of the Year in 2003.
Inductees into the Special Olympics Iowa Hall of Fame are recognized for being leaders and innovators in the Special Olympics movement and for helping those with intellectual disabilities to participate as productive and respected members of the community.
