Spencer City Council Hires New Planning Director; Approves Sidewalk Cafe Ordinance
(Spencer)-- The city of Spencer has a new Planning Director. The city council Monday evening voted to formally approve the hiring of Steve Hallgren to the position. Hallgren worked the previous 20 years or so for the Northwest Iowa Planning and Development Commission and served on the Grow Spencer Commission. He begins his new job effective May 13th and will be working with Kirby Schmidt, who will be retiring as the city's Planning Director in June.
The council also approved the final reading of an ordinance establishing sidewalk cafes in Spencer, with operational hours of 6:00 am to 11:00 pm. The sidewalk cafes cannot be operated independently of their restaurants. A fee of $25 must be paid and the appropriate paperwork also must be completed as part of the application process.
The Spencer City Council also approved the sale of a lot at the Green Industrial Center for $36,000. The lot is east of the former spec building and the Northwest Iowa Public Safety Training Center, which is under construction. The buyer's plans for the lot haven't been divulged publicly.
