(Emmetsburg)-Student Senators at Iowa Lakes Community College are encouraging the public to donate shoes in their Soles4Souls Shoe Drive. KUOO's Becky Thoreson has the story:
Iowa Lakes Community College Student Senators have launched their annual Soles4Souls shoe Drive.
Student Senate Advisor Bill Lapczenski explains. "Soles4Souls is a non-profit organization which facilitate the donation of new and used shoes to less fortunate individuals worldwide. To date they have distributed over 30 million shoes in 127 different countries around the globe."
He adds that the College partners with Village Northwest in Sheldon to facilitate the distribution of the shoes. "We're actually in a partnership with Village Northwest Unlimited in Sheldon. We put up the collection boxes. We're going to be in all five of our campuses of Iowa Lakes Community College plus our Administrative Building, and after the 28th, the students will go around and collect all these boxes of shoes and then we will take them over to Village Northwest Unlimited. With that partnership, that provides people with disabilities there at Village Northwest an opportunity to spiff up the shoes and get them ready for shipment, to Soles4Souls and then they're distributed."
Donors should tie or bind shoes together in pairs, although single shoes will be accepted. The drive runs through March 28.
