SL School Bd Approves Issuance Of Bonds And Awards Bids On Construction Projects
(Spirit Lake)-- Meeting in special session via electronic means earlier today (Thursday), the Spirit Lake School Board approved the issuance of $7.38 million in school infrastructure bonds for the construction of an early childhood center along with upgrades to entrances at the high school and district offices, and renovations at the elementary and middle schools. Some additional parking is also included.
The board also awarded bids on the projects, with the contingency of some final signatures being received on the bond documents.
Superintendent Dr. David Smith told the board one of the original components of the project, construction of a bus barn, is being left out for right now...
"Once we have everything in check with the elementary-middle school parking, etcetera, then we could come back and move on the bus barn after we felt like the finances were completely in check. I would say at a minimum we should be able to get some of the bus barn probably going sooner than later just for the fact, I don't think there's been a project ever in the history of projects that has been more scrutinized and penny pinched than this project right here. We're down to the absolute cents I think on this project so we have to keep our fingers crossed to make sure there's no major issue."
Construction on the projects is tentatively scheduled to start in late April or early May.
On another matter, the board also today (Thursday) approved paying staff while school is currently not in session due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
