SL Police To Participate Once Again In I-PLEDGE Program

Fri 12-7-2018

(Spirit Lake)-- Spirit Lake police are once again participating in a program designed to keep tobacco, alternative nicotine and vapor products out of the hands of young people.

I-PLEDGE is a partnership with the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division. The program trains retailers through an online course. Clerks who successfully complete the training course and pass an exam become I-PLEDGE certified, which allows a retail establishment to use an affirmative defense against a civil penalty in the event a certified clerk makes an illegal sale.

Another component of the program consists of a compliance check by police. Underage customers, under the supervision of law enforcement officials, will enter various establishments and attempt to buy tobacco, alternative nicotine and vapor products. Clerks who make the illegal sale will be cited immediately.

More information about the I-PLEDGE program and training can be found at the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division website.
