Road Construction About To Get Underway On Two Major Highways In The Iowa Great Lakes
(Spirit Lake)-- Road construction will soon be under way on two major highways in the Iowa Great Lakes that will have direct impacts on traffic. Dakin Schultz of the Iowa Department of Transportation tells KUOO news one of those will involve Highway 71 through the lakes corridor...
"We are looking at a patching project on U.S. 71. It's something we've been completing annually up there. We're looking at a start of the 10th of September, or Thursday after Labor Day. We anticipate it will last about five or so weeks and it will go from 202nd Street up to 41st Street in Spirit Lake, and while the operation is going on we'll have traffic down to one lane in one direction with a pilot car set up. That operation will go typically from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm."
Iowa Civil Contracting of Victor, Iowa, will be the general contractor on that project, which has a price tag of nearly $374,000.
Schultz says the other involves re-surfacing of Highway 86 on the west side of West Lake Okoboji. He says that project will start Monday, September 14th...
"And that will go from U.S. 71 up to Iowa 9. A little bigger operation there in that we will have patching on that as well but we'll have pavement scarification, we will do re-surfacing, as well as paved shouldering. We're looking at a larger project in not only scope but also in cost. That one's a $2.9 million project and we're looking at that being complete sometime in November. While that operation's going on during most facets of that we will have a pilot car operation as well in the construction zone."
The general contractor on the Highway 86 project is Blacktop Service Company & Subsidiary of Humboldt.
Schultz says patience is going to be the name of the game for both of those projects...
"Especially with the lakes area we try and do our work off season as much as we can but, you know, that we know there's still quite a bit of traffic up in that area. We'll just have to ask the motorists patience while we do improvements through those routes."
Motorists are reminded to use extra caution when driving through construction zones. Fines for moving violations in those areas are atleast double.
