(Milford)-- Students at the Okoboji Elementary School are enjoying a new playground. Superintendent Todd Abrahamson tells KUOO news it marks completion of the first phase of projects made possible thanks to passage of a $25 million bond issue back in April of this year...New Playground01

"We're excited for our kids, and again can't thank the community enough. And then the next phases of the middle school design and development is taking place now for the new building, along with our football and track, our athletic complex design, and then adding the electrical, mechanical and roofs for the elementary and high school. So a lot of things happening, but it's nice to show our appreciation to the community. You saw the excitement in our students and our staff."

Abrahamson says the new playground was designed with safety and easy maintenance in mind. He says the surfaces utilizes green-colored rubber chips...New Playground02

"It's six inches deep with a six to eight inch sub base of pea gravel underneath, so it's just a spongy, must safer. We used to do wood chips and would have to clean that out and replace it every year."

Abrahamson adds the new playground also has a learning component that's available through a downloadable app...New Playground03

"Students, parents, and our staff can download the app and do different types of games and activities with the different parts and pieces of the playground equipment."

A ribbon cutting ceremony on the new playground was held this (Thurs.) morning.
