The Spencer Historic Preservation Commission will be holding a Restoration at Riverside Cemetery on
Vice President Maureen Oechslin explains. "We will be following procedures not only of the Son's of the Civil War Veteran's guidance, but also the National Park Service, which overlooks preservation type item.s We think we probably have about 150 that need absolute attention. So, this is a collaboration where we're also hoping that people will get interested in that dimension of American history. These folks actually participated, they were able to survive it first of all, and they found a life in this area. There are some ties to Dickinson County, where people homesteaded, came to Spencer, went back to Dickinson County. It's regional, it's Iowa, it's United States."
She notes that anyone interested is invited to participate. "We'll be showing folks how to do this if they so choose. If they don't want to participate and just look over shoulders, they are entirely welcome to do so. Most of the stones that we will be working with are in the west half of what people know as the present day footprint of Riverside Cemetery. We'll be starting with the 5 graves at the West entrance."
The project will begin at 1 o'clock Saturday afternoon.
