Rail To Trail Project Awarded Funding By Iowa Transportation Commission

Tue 1-9-2018

(Ames)-- The second phase of a project to convert abandoned railroad right-of-way between Spirit Lake and Lake Park to a recreational trail has been awarded funding through a federal program. The Dickinson County Trail Board was awarded a little more than $344,000 for the second phase of what's known as the "Tatonka Ska Trace" project.

The Iowa Transportation Commission Tuesday approved a little more than $1.4 million in total funding for seven federal recreational trails projects throughout the state.

The federal Recreational Trails Program was created in 1991 to develop and maintain recreational trails and trail-related facilities for both motorized and non-motorized trail users. The funding is available to cities, counties, state and federal agencies and private organizations through an annual application-based program.
