Pioneer Days In Milford Cancelled For This Year Due To COVID-19 Concerns

Fri 5-1-2020

(Milford)-- Another popular summer celebration in the lakes area is being canceled for this year due to COVID-19 concerns. The Milford Commercial Club's Executive Board voted 5-0 earlier this week to cancel this year's Pioneer Days scheduled for July 24th-26th. The event's Co-Chair, Susan Reiser, says there is just too much uncertainty right now and that a decision had to be made...Susan Reiser01

"Pioneer Days planning takes four to five months. We've been working two months already and we were just looking at the next two months ahead. We are really unknown what's going to happen in this area or in the state or with people. Will it be a safe environment for everybody? And so because we are concerned about the safety of the persons who would attend our events we just decided to make the decision now rather than later, by July 1st, to just not have Pioneer Days this year. We will return next year."

This would have marked the 52nd year for the event, and Reiser believes this is the first time in the history of Pioneer Days they've had to cancel it for a year...Susan Reiser02

"I've lived in this community all my life and I've never known it to be cancelled, so yes. And it is sad, but we really need to take all of the big picture into account in making our decision."

Reiser says depending on how things go over the next couple of months, they may still look at having a couple of events later on...Susan Reiser03

"If things calm down by July 1st maybe there is a chance of a parade, you know. That's easy for us to pull together. Or maybe a noon barbecue on Saturday. You know it would be wonderful if that barbecue could be a thank you for all the hard work the last months, we're now being able to be out again and be safe. It would be a wonderful barbecue to celebrate that. We just don't know and so I guess we're erring on the side of caution."

Reiser says the committee may also look at the possibility of moving some of the Pioneer Days events, such as BINGO, to the Holiday Fantasy in December.
