(Emmetsburg)-- Two more area counties have been officially recognized for achieving status as Home Base Iowa Communities. Palo Alto and Kossuth counties were both recognized in a ceremony Tuesday attended by Governor Terry Branstad.

The initiative is a statewide effort intended to attract and retain service members transitioning out of the military into civilian life. The program provides incentives offered by local businesses, along with a veteran hiring preferance. It also provides $5,000 for down payment or closing costs on a home through the Iowa Finance Authority Military Homeownership Assistance Program, and in-state tuition rates for veterans and their dependents.

A number of other counties in the region, including Buena Vista, Clay, Dickinson and Emmet, have also achieved Home Base Iowa status.
