(Milford)-The Okoboji High School Jazz Band has earned top honors at recent competitions. KUOO's Becky Thoreson has details:
With the competition season getting into full swing, the Okoboji High School Jazz Band already has two top finishes under their belt.
Band Director Brian Middleton explains. "So, we went down to Morningside last Thursday, February 8, and that was the first time we've gone out as part of a competition, so it was kind of fun for the kids to get out and hear a couple different bands and play on a stage. We placed 1st out of 11 2A Bands that were down there. Then we went down to Southeast Polk High School, which is in Pleasant Hills just east of Des Moines Satureday, February 10, and there were 4 2A Bands there, and we got 1st Place there."
He says the Band will perform at UNI this weekend, then travel to the District Competition next week. "We're going to the Tall Corn Jazz Festival at UNI on Friday, that's just for comments only. We'll go down and play, hear some bands and we'll get a clinic after we play. Then, on Monday, the 19th, we have the District Jazz Festival which is the qualifier for The Iowa Jazz Championships."
The Okoboji Jazz Band will be joined by the Middle School Band for the Evening of Jazz Concert on Friday February 23 at 7:30 at the High School Auditorium.
