Okoboji City Council Votes To Re-Open Facilities, Except Playground Equipment, At Speier Park
(Okoboji)-- The Okoboji City Council voted three-to-one Tuesday evening to reopen most of the amenities at Speier Park that had been closed previously under proclamation of Governor Kim Reynolds due to COVID-19. The Governor recently lifted the proclamation, with the exception of playground equipment.
Those areas of the park that will be reopened, effective Wednesday (May 13th) include the shelter house and the basketball and tennis courts. The playground equipment will remain off limits in accordance with the Governor's proclamation.
City Administrator Michael Meyers reported city crews will be moving some picnic tables out of the shelter house and will place the existing tables so they are atleast six feet apart.
Councilman Walter Mendenhall voted against the re-opening, siting concern over the basketball court. He expressed concern over the greater potential of the spread of COVID-19 with that sport given the physical exertion involved and close proximity of the players.
