Okoboji City Council Approves Letter Of Support For Hwy 71 Study
(Okoboji)-- The Okoboji City Council last (Tues.) evening voted in favor of a resolution supporting a traffic study on Highway 71 through the lakes corridor from Highway 9 to Highway 86. The study is being requested by Imagine Iowa Great Lakes, the group behind a multi-million dollar beautification of the area. Okoboji City Administrator Michael Meyers told the council Imagine Iowa Great Lakes has expressed an interest in helping to fund some possible improvements to the main thoroughfare through the area...
"This would include looking at the traffic flow and seeing possibly what could be done along Highway 71 to both increase mobility in the corridor to include cars as well as pedestrians, cyclists, golf carts, everything, as well as making traffic more efficient and just providing an array of possibilities as to what can be done."
The Iowa Department of Transportation has already budgeted money for a re-surfacing project on Highway 71 through Arnolds Park and Okoboji...
"The Iowa DOT has already programmed $11.2 million in their budget for reconstruction of Highway 71. I believe that's in 2023 or '22, and we have been told by the Imagine group that the donor group is considering also putting in a substantial amount of money towards realizing what some of these solutions may be."
Meyers added the Imagine Iowa Great Lakes group has indicated it will contribute $250,000 toward the $500,000 study. He said the group plans to approach D.O.T commissioners at their meeting September 9th in Arnolds Park to request the agency pay the remaining $250,000 of the study.
