OHS Jazz Band & Jazz Choir Win Honors At USD Coyote Jazz Festival

(Okoboji)-Okoboji High School’s Jazz Band and Jazz Choir traveled to Vermillion, South Dakota, to perform at the USD Coyote Jazz Festival on Tuesday, March 17.
Boji Voices won 3rd place in Class 2A. 1st place went to Sheldon with Sibley-Ocheyedan winning 2nd. There were five jazz choirs competing in Class 2A.
Vocal solo awards were presented to Emma Myhre, Erin Moir, Brittany Kolbeck, Tom Mayer, Austin Kolegraff, and Isaac Golke.
The OHS jazz band won 1st place in Class 2A. There were thirteen bands competing in Class 2A.
South Central Calhoun finished in 2nd, Sibley-Ocheyedan and Underwood tied for 3rd, 4th, and Southeast Valley placed 5th.
Outstanding soloist awards were presented to Mallory Luers on clarinet; Jon Ahrens on bari sax; Luke Thompson on trumpet; Dalton Adams, Thor Heimdal, and Tom Mayer on trombone; Austin Kolegraff on bass; and Brittany Kolbeck on drums.
“We were very excited for this festival because we had such good competition. Underwood was the top Class 2A band at South West Iowa district jazz,” said OHS director Greg Forney. “At North Central Iowa district jazz Southeast Valley was the number two 2A band and South Central Calhoun was the top band. South Central Calhoun is also the only 2A band that has placed ahead of us this year.”
Boji Voices will perform at the Iowa Vocal Jazz Championships on April 7th at Morningside College in Sioux City.
The Okoboji Jazz Band will perform at the Iowa Jazz Championships on March 31st at 2:15 in Des Moines at the Iowa Events Center. This will be Okoboji’s 21st consecutive appearance at the Iowa Jazz Championships.
The Okoboji High School Jazz Band is directed by Greg Forney and assisted by Julie Forney. Boji Voices is directed by Erin Orness and accompanied by Melanie Ellis.
