Officials Say Now Is A Good Time To Review Your Homeowner's And Flood Insurance Policies
(Des Moines)-- With warmer temperatures, rain and what's expected to be a rapid melt of a heavy snow pack all in the forecast comes a reminder to read and understand your homeowners and flood insurance policies.
The Iowa Insurance division reminds homeowners water and sewer backup coverage is different than flood insurance. Commissioner Doug Ommen says while some homeowners policies include the provisions, neither are automatically included as part of a regular homeowner's policy.
In addition, Ommen also says there is 30-day waiting period before flood insurance takes effect. Flood insurance is available through the National Flood Insurance Program and may be purchased through many licensed property insurance agents. Separate policies can be purchased for a building or its contents through the NFIP. Flood insurance is also available for renters and businesses. Lower-cost Preferred Risk Policies designed for properties located in moderate-to low-risk flood zones are also available.
