NW Iowa Man Facing Federal Mail Fraud Charge
(Sioux City)-- A Schaller man has been charged in U.S. District Court with mail fraud in connection with a scheme related to COVID-19.
The U.S. Attorney's Office says the charge against 61-year-old Alvin Rex is contained in a criminal complaint alleging that in about May of this year he received $19,000 in funds from the federal CARES Act deposited in his account at a bank in Storm Lake. The complaint says the funds were from fraudulent unemployment claims Rex is accused of filing in the names of other people in Massachusetts and Arizona
If convicted he faces a possible maximum sentence of 20 years' imprisonment, a $250,000 fine and three years of supervised release following any imprisonment.
Rex appeared today (Thurs.) in U.S. District Court in Sioux City and was released on bonding pending future court appearances.
