(Estherville)-A STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Festival is being offered to middle school students in Northwest Iowa next month, KUOO's Becky Thoreson has details:
The Northwest Iowa Advanced Manufacturing STEM Festival will be held online in October.
Northwest STEM Regional Manager Mary Trent explains. "We have invited students in 7th grade or middle school to join us in the past, and we've always had a larger demand than what we've been able to provide for our registration. So, when this year came around, we looked at COVID not as a hindrance or challenge but as an opportunity. So, we turned our Advanced Manufacturing Festival into a virtual festival, and it's open to 22 counties in Iowa. It's open to students in grades 5-8. So, once the kids register, we'll send out a STEM kit to them, and in that kit will be all the materials they need to do hands-on STEM activities that directly relate to our Advanced Manufacturers. We've also matched that with Iowa Standards so teachers can integrate that into their curriculum really easily. It's just a really great opportunity to get kids exposed to the wonderful advanced manufacturing opportunities we have in Northwest Iowa."
She adds that the festival is offered free of charge. "It is absolutely free. The kits are free as well, and registration opens the 21st of September and it goes through the 25th. The festival itself is open for the entire month of October, so October 1-31."
