(Hartley)-- An Elementary Principal in the Dunkerton Community School District has been selected as the next Superintendent of the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn School District. Patrick Carlin will succeed Bill Thompson in the position effective July 1st. Thompson is retiring at the end of the current school year. The hiring of Carlin is still pending a background check and final approval by the H-M-S school board.

Carlin has served in his current position nearly four years. He and his wife Stacy and their two children live in Cedar Falls. The Carlins are natives of northwest Iowa.

The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn school board worked with a consulting firm in the process of searching for a new Superintendent. Six candidates were selected as semi-finalists, who were screened by the board and an administrative team March 13th. Three finalists were interviewed by district and community stakeholders on March 19th.

In addition to serving as elementary Principal in Dunkerton, Carlin also served as the district's curriculum, special education and transportation directors. He also has been an adjunct instructor at Upper Iowa University in Waterloo where he received an excellence in teaching award in 2014-15.
