New Design Coming To Iowa Driver's Licenses Starting Monday
(Spirit Lake)-- Iowa driver's licenses are about to take on a new look. Dickinson County Treasurer Kris Rowley tells KUOO news the licenses will have a new design starting Monday...
"So the design is going to replace the windmill that's currently on them with an image of the state capitol, especially the dome, and a few other things in there for security enhancements."
The change will also affect I.D cards.
Rowley adds those who need to renew their driver's licenses may want to strongly consider getting the “REAL ID” version. She says you'll need to have that or a passport to be able to board any commercial aircraft or get into any federal building beginning October 1st, 2020...
"We're just trying to get the word out to people that if you need to get a new driver's license, if it's your time, you may want to consider upgrading to the Real ID. And now if you come in starting Monday to get that driver's license, whether it's a Real ID or whether it's just the regular Iowa driver's license it will look different. And I want people to know that's a real change, so if you're a store owner or somebody that looks at ID's for any of your businesses, just know that it's going to look different with the ones that are issued starting Monday. The old ones will still be effective, no problem with having an older one as long as the date is still current and hasn't expired yet. So they'll have two looks for awhile until the old ones finally all age out."
Rowley says you'll need to provide some additional documentation when applying for a REAL ID driver's license or I.D card. You can find what documentation is required by visiting the Iowa DOT's website or by visiting the Treasurer's Office portion of the Dickinson county website. You can also call the driver's license station at the Dickinson County Treasurer's Office at 336-6277.
