MnDOT Opens Highway 60 J-Turns At Heron Lake
(Heron Lake, Mn.)-- All three J-turns on Highway 60 in Heron Lake opened to traffic late yesterday (Wednesday, October 9).
The summer-long construction project consisted of improving intersection safety by constructing three J-turns, also known as Reduced Conflict Intersections on Highway 60 at the intersections of Jackson County Roads 24, 9 and 43.
Studies show a 70 percent reduction in fatalities and a 42 percent reduction in injury crashes where J-turns are used.
The recent crash history at the Jackson County Road 9 intersection showed an above average number of crashes; most of which were right-angle or T-bone crashes. Two of these resulted in three fatalities.
Only addressing the problem at 10th Street could result in the problem being relocated to the other intersections that serve Heron Lake, which is why all three intersections were converted to J-turns.
More information on J-turns can be found online at mndot.gov.
