(Okoboji)-An Ecotourism and cleanup day is scheduled on Sunday for Millers Bay on West Okoboji, KUOO's Becky Thoreson has details:
The Miller's Bay Conservancy is asking the public to recognize the Sunday of Labor Day Weekend as Millers Bay Ecotourism Day.
Board Member Deborah Cotton Lanners says a number of activities will be offered with Iowa Lakeside Laboratory. "They are the site for the ecotourism activities that they're offering for the day, and they'll have information about their Bird Hike at 11 am. They'll also have a kayak event where they'll go out into the bay."
She notes that a cleanup of the bay will be held on Sunday as well. "The other request would be to avoid anchoring. We are asking that you anchor elsewhere outside of the no-wake zone that day to provide space and safety for those cleaning up. The Lakeside Lab worked with Boji Divers to get a diving component involved in that cleanup. So, they'll be actually diving for trash in the no-wake zone. So that makes it doubly important that we limit motor boats and certainly avoid anchoring in that area for the day. Be sure that those recreating in the area observe the red and white Diver Down flags, because Iowa boat law does require boat traffic to stay at least 50 feet away from those."
The clean up will be happening from 11-5 on Sunday.
