Milford Council Hears Update On Monument & Proposal For New City Park
(Milford)-- There was additional discussion at last (Mon.) evening's Milford City Council meeting regarding a proposal for a new city park that would be located on the former Koth property at the corner of Highway 71 and 13th Street. There had been discussion previously about relocating the mill monument, currently in front of the former city hall, to that site. But Tim Kinnetz who's heading up a time capsule committee for the city's quasquicentennial celebration later this summer said they've decided against that. He says they've determined the base of the monument is deterioriating. Kinnetz says they now are involving some students at the Okoboji schools to come up with a new idea for the placement of the time capsules...
"The vision has kind of changed. We're not going to be able to put this all together by the centennial events this year, but I think maybe at our closing ceremony we could have our four time capsules there. The actual capsules, the vaults themselves, do a dedication ceremony, have the Mayor speak about dedicating that park to a long term city park, then we can work on this, like this presentation says, January with the kids and have them come up with some ideas and make presentations and then figure out how these vaults will go either into the monument or in the earth there, kind of let them come up with some ideas and take it from there."
While it won't be possible to move the entire monument, Kinnetz says he would like to see something like a small replica of the mill built which would incorporate the stone grinder in the current monument, which is original to the mill.
The city's park board will consider the proposal for the new park at an upcoming meeting.
