Little Sioux River Flooding Results In Some Changes For Flagfest Activities
(Spencer)-- This coming week will be a busy one for folks in Spencer. The annual Flag Fest celebration is coming up June 7th-9th and preparations are in high gear. Becky Fear Hatting of the Spencer Chamber of Commerce says the events get kicked off Friday at Arts on Grand and the Clay County Federated Garden Club...
"The Clay County Federated Garden Club puts flowers out that kind of go with all the different art projects that are down there, so you might want to walk down there and see that on Friday. The Moose Lodge is hosting some campers and they're going to have a flea market. And also there will be the Movie In The Park by the Jaycees. Everybody needs to know that has been moved this year. It will not be at East Leech Park. It is at the hospital Grand Avenue Park."
And of course one of the highlights of Flag Fest again this year will be the parade Saturday...
"And it will be at 11:00. At this point it will probably be an hour and-a-half, two hour parade. I'm still taking entries until noon on Wednesday."
And Hatting says there will be plenty for the kids to do as well...
"There will be seven inflatables and I do have a few that are just specific for little kids so anyone who has young families, make sure you bring them. They won't have to interact with the bigger kids and get pushed around. Make sure you bring them out too. Then we of course also have the big obstacle course and jousting and things for the older kids, so it should be a fun afternoon. That's going to go from 1:00 until 7:00, so it's going to go into the evening, which will be good. Plus we have some concessionaires that will be there for food so you can feed them there, you don't have to do dishes, you don't have to cook at home, you can come down and feed them down where our concession area is at. Also new is a kiddie train that is coming, so that will be fun and going around. The rock wall will be there from the National Guard; starting at 2:00 the Farm Bureau is going to do a tractor pull."
The Grand Cruise and Street Dance will also be held Saturday evening.
Some of the activities scheduled for East Leech Park have been relocated due to flooding. The children's inflatables, kiddie train, rock wall, pedal pull and food concessions will be set up on West 5th Street in downtown Spencer from 1:00 until 7:00 pm Saturday, June 8th. The Buffalo Ridge Renegades and river float events have been cancelled.
