Thu 12-19-2019 Storm Lake, Ia
(Storm Lake)-Storm Lake Police responded to an accident Wednesday morning just after 8 o'clock at the intersection of Highways 7 and 110.
Responding units were advised that a child had been ejected from a vehicle and a second person was trapped in a vehicle.
Upon the arrival of police and fire units, it was determined that a 5-year-old male had been ejected from one of the vehicles and a second 3-year-old female child in the same vehicle was also injured but not ejected. The driver of the vehicle was also injured and the driver of the second vehicle was reportedly injured as well.
Firefighters and law enforcement treated the injured at the scene and transported them to the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
Upon investigation it was determined that a 2005 Pontiac Montana traveling eastbound on Highway 7 operated by Francisco Sanchez, age 79 of Storm Lake was struck by a northbound 2007 Chevrolet Suburban operated by Owenson Alex, age 29 of Lakeside, Iowa, which was also occupied by two children. The collision caused the vehicles to skid out of control ejecting the 5-year-old child. Police say the two children were not secured in child restraint devices and the Alex vehicle disobeyed the stop sign in the northbound lane of highway 110.
Alex was cited with 2 counts of Failure to Use Child Restraints and 1 count of Disobeying a Traffic Control Device.
The Chevy Suburban is considered a total loss. The Montana sustained approximately $6000.00 in damage.
The investigation is continuing.
The SLPD was assisted at the scene by the Storm Lake Fire Department, the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Department, and Buena Vista County Paramedics.
