(Okoboji)-Dr. Mary Skopec will discuss Iowa's Beach Monitoring Program at the Friends of Lakeside Lab's Science Seminar on Tuesday evening. KUOO's Becky Thoreson has details:
The Friends of Lakeside Lab present the Science Seminar Series on Tuesday evenings.
This week, Lakeside Lab Executive Director Dr. Mary Skopec will be discussing Iowa's Beach Monitoring Program. "Really, what it's about is helping citizens understand whether or not it's safe to go swimming, more from a how's the water quality doing standpoint than if the water's too cold or too murky. So, we're really trying to help people understand some of the risks of swimming at beaches and how to protect themselves."
She adds that the public can find information on the DNR's Website. "The results are usually listed on the DNR Beach Monitoring web page once a week. The typical protocol has been to sample on Mondays and Tuesdays, and then try to have those results back to the public by Thursday. Most people want to make a decision by Friday, so that helps people understand where they maybe want to swim, or they maybe want to avoid, and that tends to either be through the Beach Hotline that the DNR holds, or there's a web page that says Beach Monitoring, and people can find that information on that web page."
The Science Seminar will begin at 7:30 Tuesday evening at Mahan Hall on the Lakeside Lab Campus and is free and open to the public.
