IUB Issues Emergency Order Extending Utility Winter Moratorium Period Due To Coronavirus Concerns

Sat 3-14-2020

(Des Moines)-- The Iowa Utilities Board Friday issued an emergency order directing all electric and natural gas utilities in the state to cease disconnection of residential service due to nonpayment. It's in response to a statewide disaster proclamation issued March 9th by Governor Kim Reynolds to enhance the state's response to novel coronavirus, or COVID-19.

The extended moratorium period will continue until May 1st, 2020. Income-eligible Iowans have until April 30th each year to apply for limited financial heating assistance through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP. The application deadline was NOT extended with Friday's order.

Iowa customers seeking LIHEAP assistance should contact their local community action agency before April 30th to discuss eligibility guidelines.

The statewide extension period issued by the IUB's order Friday applies to all investor-owned, municipal and cooperative utilities in Iowa.
