ISU Extension & Outreach To Offer Series Of Farm Bill Workshops In NW Iowa During December

Mon 11-4-2019

(Spirit Lake)-- A series of workshops on the 2018 Farm Bill will be held throughout northwest Iowa during the month of December.

Gary Wright, Farm Business Management Specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach tells KUOO news the meetings are designed to help producers, landlords and other agri-business professions with a discussion of farm operation strategies including the 2018 Farm Bill election and enrollment process...Farm Bill Workshops01

"I just recently saw that the USDA has finalized some of their materials. They're actually going to be at these sessions. Each one of these sessions will be exactly the same. They'll be there, along with Iowa State University Extension, and we'll actually talk about in light of the Farm Bill, what gives some help to folks in terms of making a decision, because just like in 2014 the ARC-PLC decision is paramount. I guess the good news is compared to 2014 they're going to be asked, producers are going to be asked to make two year decisions this time around and they will get a chance to look at the final two years of the Farm Bill, but immediately what they'll be asked about is the ARC-PLC decision for the 2019-2020 crop. So I'll be talking about the decision making tools, and then we'll also talk about some really financial-related components to that decision in doing some projections on profitability and finances that kind of relate directly to the ARC-PLC decision."

Wright says some professionals will also be on hand at the sessions to talk about stress management.

He says the timing of the meetings next month may prove to be a challenge for some producers...Farm Bill Workshops02

"You know we're hoping that harvest is all but over by then, certainly if we catch some good weather we know there's some fertility things that get done in the fall of the year as well, but we're hoping the timing will work out for us. Right now, again, we've got a lot of harvest yet to do as you drive around northwest Iowa."

The sessions will be held December 3rd in Rock Rapids (Frontier Bank basement. Pre-register at 712-472-2576); December 4th at Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville (pre-register at 712-362-3434); December 10th at the Hap Ketelsen Community Center in Everly (pre-register at 712-262-2264); December 11th at Iowa Lakes Community College in Emmetsburg...door 3...(pre-register at 712-852-2865); December 17th at Northwest Iowa Community College Building A in Sheldon (pre-register at 712-957-5045); December 18th at Prairie Lakes AEA in Storm Lake (pre-register at 712-732-5056); and December 19th at ISU Extension and Outreach Plymouth County in Le Mars (pre-register at 712-546-7835).
