Iowa State Patrol urges Motorists to plan ahead for Winter Weather, New Year's Eve

With an increased number of travelers due to the holidays, and winter weather back in the forecast, The Iowa State Patrol is urging motorists to exercise caution in the coming days.

Sergeant Vince Kurtz explains.  "First of all, stay updated on the latest forecast on what could be coming.  Also, be watching for the 511 updates that will come out periodically.  Check your website applications that have access to the road conditions, because that is really one of the most important things that you can check before you travel in addition to the forecast to know what it's going to be like on the roadways."

He adds that now's the time to plan ahead for New Year's Eve.  "Make sure that you're using a designated driver if your plans include alcohol.  The latest numbers we have are over $10,000 in fines, surcharges and court costs that will be coming your way if you are arrested for OWI and convicted.  Really, the biggest thing that we want people to remember there is, on top of any of those fines and issues, the danger that you're putting yourself in and your loved ones, and others on the roadway that could be impacted by your poor choices."
