Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation expands The North Shore Project with Acquisition of additional fields
(Spirit Lake)-The North Shore Project has been expanded, KUOO's Becky Thoreson has an update:
The North Shore Project on Big Spirit Lake is underway and has been expanded.
Anita O'Gara, Vice President with the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation explains. "This is the 160 acres that we purchased next to the Shore Acres neighborhood. So, it lies between the Minnesota border, on the highway, clear to the shore of the Lake where the homes are. We knew that doing some restoration here was going to really help benefit the water quality of the Iowa Great Lakes, starting with Big Spirit Lake."
She adds that in addition to the original parcel, The Foundation recently purchased adjacent fields. "We had the opportunity to purchase 3 fields that are lying between the Wallace & Bowers Nature Area, and Mini-Wakan Park. So, they're also adjacent to the McClellan Beach Wildlife Management Area that the DNR manages for wildlife and water quality. All 3 of these fields are adjoining these public lands, and when you piece them all together it means that everything from the south side of the highway that divides Iowa and Minnesota is now going to have a conservation goal for it."
