(Okoboji)-Two upcoming events will focus on the transfer of farmland. KUOO's Becky Thoreson has details:
Iowa Lakeside Lab is hosting two events focused on Farmland Transfer this week.
On Thursday, Mary Swander's play titled, Map of My Kingdom: Who is going to get the Farm? will be performed at the Pearson Lakes Art Center.
Swander says the play was commissioned by Practical Farmers of Iowa. "It's kind of been a quiet problem so, Practical Farmer's of Iowa thought that this would raise the awareness about it, and it really has. The play, we started out thinking we were going to have four performances and we're way over a hundred now and we've gone throughout the State of Iowa and heavily toured in the Midwest. We just got back from a big tour in the Pacific Northwest. We've toured on the East Coast, and, if you don't have a farm, you have something, and so it's also about wealth transfer."
She adds that a companion workshop on Farmland Transfer will be held at Lakeside Lab on Friday. "We're going to talk about what your values are for passing on the land and what are some common family scenarios, and then try to get some basics down about what your vision for the future will be."
Both events are free and open to the public.
