Wed 9-26-2018

(Spencer)-- The Iowa Lakes Corridor Development Corporation is out with it's annual report for Fiscal Year 2018 which concluded June 30th. Kylie Miller, President and CEO, tells KUOO news one of the big highlights was with business recruitment and retention that resulted in 55 projects and 12 deals that were closed, creating more than 300 jobs and $550 million in capital investment...Corridor Report01

"Obviously Safco was an example of a great success as well as the new Pivot Point Spencer taking the Eaton building and several other projects. When you put them together, we helped move more than 700,000 square feet in just the last six months of the fiscal year."

Miller says they also saw key gains in another area: entrepreneurship...Corridor Report02

"Economists will tell us that the recession ended quite a while ago but nonetheless there was a lot of pent up economic energy that's been unleashed. We've seen that as well in our entrepreneurial program. Brian Dalziel, our Senior Vice President, he had more than 30 clients last year and he helped them start multiple new businesses and raise quite a bit of money to create new jobs in the area, and we really understand that entrepreneurial small business and existing business growth, that's the sustainable growth we need in our region."

Miller says the Corridor looks forward to continuing to build on the successes while also addressing some ongoing needs...Corridor Report03

"The big impediment right now is the availability of workforce. The Corridor along with every partner and community and just about every partner and business is making that a priority by focusing on housing, by focusing on workforce training. I was at the great Future Ready Iowa event hosted by Iowa Workforce Development yesterday in which they talked about the need to make sure that 70 percent of Iowans have education beyond high school, and of course recruiting new people and that's really a big part of this with our Get A Lakes Life marketing initiative to promote to people outside the region just how great it is to live and work here in the Iowa Lakes Corridor region."
