A number of events are on tap for Veterans Day at Iowa Lakes Community College, KUOO's Becky Thoreson has details:
Iowa Lakes Community College Student Leaders are organizing special events for Veteran's Day.
Veterans Liaison Kent Schmidt says all campuses are displaying Honor Trees. "Basically, it's a way of recognizing Veterans in your life, Veterans that you appreciate. We have different colored ribbons, people can take little stars and write on them the service member's name or where they're serving or where they served and then hang it on the tree."
He notes that each campus will host special programs on Monday. "Here in Emmetsburg, we're going to have a ceremony on Veteran Day at 11 o'clock. We have some essays that students have written, and then we have lunch for our student Veterans. In Estherville, something similar to that, the choir is going to be singing some patriotic songs there, we have a keynote speaker, free meals for all Veterans that day and in Algona, there's a tradition there. The students go to Hy-Vee. They give thank you cards to all the Veterans there as they're being served. In Spencer, it's pretty cool, they're going to have a balloon launch, and then in Spirit Lake, and so all campuses kind of have their different spin on it but they're all pretty cool."
