(Estherville)-Iowa Lakes Community College has several events planned to honor Veterans, KUOO's Becky Thoreson has the story:
Iowa Lakes Community College Student Leaders have organized special events as Veteran's Day approaches.
Veterans Liason Kent Schmidt says, each campus will honor Veterans. "It's really neat because every campus puts their own unique spin on honoring our Veterans each and every year. For example, at Spirit Lake, they have a patriotic display, Honor Tree. An Honor Tree is kind of like a Christmas Tree, except for you can come in and tie various colored ribbons. Each ribbon has a different meaning. So Spirit Lake does that. Algona goes to Hy-Vee every year and gives thank you cards to Veterans as they're getting served breakfast there. Emmetsburg and Estherville are having more formal ceremonies with music. We just want to be really intentional about saying thank you to our Veterans."
He adds that the College has recently received the U.S. Veteran's Magazine Best of the Best Award for honoring Vets. "U.S. Veteran's Magazine has this survey, and the last two years we've won Best of the Best among colleges in the U.S. In fact, one of only three community colleges nationwide who have received that honor."
