Iowa Great Lakes Rotary Club Car Drop Contest underway

The Annual Iowa Great Lakes Rotary Club Car Drop Contest is officially underway, with the car placed on the ice of West Okoboji.

Public Relations Chair Mary Skopec explains.  "The Car Drop is a shell of a car that goes out on Smith's Bay and there is an atomic clock inside the car, and when the car goes through the ice when Spring finally comes, it stops the clock.  So, people can buy a ticket for $10, and that ticket is related to the time, a.m. or p.m., that the car goes through the ice.  Whoever happens to get the right time, wins $1000."

She notes that proceeds from the contest help with the Club's community projects. "You know, Rotary has been very active in the community.  Our most recent project was the Shelby Duis Park.  We put a whole new playground out there and so we spent a lot of money really upgrading the equipment for kids out there.  We've been active at Camp Foster, as well, and we just recently completed a drive to bring non-food items to food pantries around the area."

Tickets are available from any Iowa Great Lakes Rotarian, as well as at The Hutt, The Dry Dock and online.
